Olivia's Big, Not so Fun Day!

{April 20, 2011}
One night Olivia was sleeping with me and I realized how loud she snores, all of the time!  At first I thought, "is she getting sick?"  And then it hit me that I should look at her tonsils.  The next morning I looked at her throat and I was shocked with how big tonsils were.  To be honest I didn't realize that you could see them really, but when I looked in her throat I knew exactly what it was and that we had a problem!  We went to the Doctor and he gave the, "oh my, those are huge!"  We then went to and ENT, he said, "oh my gosh those are big!"  I was glad that I wasn't the only one who thought they were huge.  I needed her to get in as soon as possible to get them out so that she could heal before all of her dancing competitions that she had.

So the next week we were off bright and early to get her tonsils out.  She was very nervous, but she tried her hardest to be brave!
We gave her a Pink Bunny, "Pinkie" to comfort her.  It was the best $5.00 spent, she has held tight to that Pink Bunny!!!

She was not impressed with this hospital gown.  When she had to get her teeth done she got to wear little kids scrubs, so when they gave us this gown she replied, "this is stupid!"  I had to take a picture of the back of it so she could see that you really couldn't see her panties (that is what she was concerned about, I'm sure).  The hardest part with having your kids go through surgeries is having to say good bye.  This time was worse then when she had to get her teeth done a few months ago.  She held on so tight to my neck, my heart broke for her, but I knew she would be fine.  The nurses pulled her off of my neck, then she was off!

We went to a different Doctor then when Marcus got his out, I loved this guy, he was wonderful.  One thing that I was offered to do was watch the procedure.  I was a little nervous, but how could I pass that up!  He took me to the viewing room where they have a TV and then they have the camera all hooked up in the operating room.  I was holding my mouth most of the 15 minutes that went by, but I thought it was so interesting.  I liked hearing what he was doing, he talked all through it and gave step by step detail information.  I also thought it was interesting to what he had to say about it.  One of her tonsils he said, "was bulging, it was wanting to jump right out".  He said lots of times that her tonsils and adenoids were "humongous"!  The one tonsil that was "jumping" out also had pockets of puss, he said, "that is a sign of chronic infection".  I had no idea, at that moment I realized this little Princess of mine had a high pain tolerance!!!  Once he got to the adenoids, he couldn't stop saying how big they were, he wasn't to sure how she could breath.

It was a very interesting thing to be able to do, something I am so glad that I did.  I would highly suggest if you have the chance to do it, do it!!!!

I honestly wonder how I didn't realize sooner that her tonsils needed to be removed.  I mean look at those things!  I also often wonder how she even swallowed anything as well!!!!

She was pretty brave coming out of it.  She did a lot better then I thought she would!  During the next five days she did wonderful.  Hardly any complaining and she could go a lot longer then 4 hours without pain medication.  I felt like I needed to tie her down most of the time!  Once the 6th day hit that is when we struggled for a few days.  Everything she ate or drank hurt her throat. Every time she woke up in the morning or nap time, it hurt.  I felt so bad for her, tears would just stream down her face.

Overall this recovery has gone so well.  When Marcus had it done, he would not take pain medication because every time he would he would throw-up.  He wasn't a hard patient, but I felt helpless because I couldn't make anything better for him.  I explained to Olivia the importance of taking her medicine even if it didn't taste good, so we have never had any problems with her.  She is a brave little thing and she is one tough cookie!!!!  {if anyone would like to watch how it is done, come on over we can pop so popcorn and watch it!!!}
